Warning to India: Tampering with IWT will be an act of war: Dar

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has issued a stern warning to India, stating that any tampering with the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) will be regarded as an act of war.

In an interview with American media, Dar emphasized the seriousness of recent tensions between Pakistan and India, noting that certain global powers – particularly the United States – realized that any further escalation could have led to dangerous and devastating consequences.

Dar revealed that U.S. Secretary Robieux contacted him on May 10, shortly after Pakistan had nearly completed a critical military operation. The call followed a discussion between Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Secretary Robieux.

According to Dar, Robieux conveyed that India was now willing to halt further action. In response, Dar assured the U.S. that if India refrained from further aggression, Pakistan would also stand down.

“The U.S. Secretary assured me that if Pakistan agreed to de-escalate, India would follow suit — and that is exactly what happened,” said Dar.

His remarks underscore the fragile nature of regional stability and highlight Pakistan’s red lines regarding water rights and national sovereignty.
