WASHINGTON: A powerful and destructive winter storm has gripped large parts of the United States, severely disrupting daily life across multiple states.
Authorities have declared a state of emergency in 18 states as heavy snowfall, freezing rain, and extreme cold continue to batter the region.
According to reports, more than 200 million people could be affected by the severe weather system. The National Weather Service said heavy snowfall has already been recorded in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, while major cities including Washington, New York, Philadelphia, and Boston are also expected to experience intense snowfall.
Officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors. The Mayor of New York issued a public advisory warning citizens to stay home due to hazardous road conditions and reduced visibility. To manage the situation, National Guard units have been deployed in nine states to assist with emergency response and relief operations.
The storm has caused widespread disruption to air travel, with more than 10,000 flights canceled nationwide. In addition, over 84,000 customers are without electricity as strong winds and ice accumulation damage power infrastructure.
The US President stated that federal agencies are working closely with state authorities to ensure public safety and provide assistance to affected regions. He added that the federal government remains in constant contact with state officials and is closely monitoring the evolving situation.
Emergency services consideration relief efforts ongoing as meteorologists warn that the severe weather conditions may persist in the coming days.
