World Bank Approves $47.9m Education Grant for Punjab
LAHORE: The World Bank has approved a $47.9 million assistance package to improve primary education in Punjab, Pakistan.
The project aims to promote early education, re-enroll out-of-school children, and strengthen teacher support systems.
This latest approval follows a $150 million funding package sanctioned in June 2025, which was also allocated to enhance primary education for both boys and girls in Punjab. The World Bank’s Executive Board had endorsed the earlier package, targeting improvements in learning outcomes across the province.
According to the Bank’s statement, approximately 7 million children in Punjab remain out of school. Through this program, nearly 5 million children are expected to benefit directly. The initiative will also support 7,000 headmasters and around 165,000 teachers.
World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, Najy Benhassine, emphasized that the funds would be used to improve access to quality education and strengthen learning levels. He added that the program will play a vital role in ensuring boys and girls across Punjab have better educational opportunities.
Implementation of the project will begin once the funds are released to Pakistan.
