World facing moral crisis, says UN chief

UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said the world is facing a “moral crisis” due to rising authoritarianism, deepening inequality, and a lack of compassion for human suffering.

Speaking via video link at Amnesty International’s Global Assembly,  Guterres urged governments to uphold international law and protect human rights. He said human rights must be defended consistently, even when it is difficult or unpopular.

The UN chief highlighted the situation in Gaza as one of the most urgent crises. He condemned the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas but said the large-scale destruction and loss of life since then cannot be justified.

“More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed while trying to access food. This is not just a humanitarian crisis, it is a moral crisis,” he said.

Guterres called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and full humanitarian access. He also stressed the need for concrete steps toward a two-state solution.

He warned that authoritarian practices are increasing worldwide, with governments suppressing opposition, silencing journalists, and targeting minorities. He said women’s and girls’ rights, especially in Afghanistan, are being rolled back.

Guterres also criticized digital platforms for spreading hate and misinformation. He urged countries to act on the Global Digital Compact to make the internet safer and more responsible.

On climate change, he said the crisis is a major human rights issue. He welcomed a recent opinion by the International Court of Justice confirming that countries must protect the climate under international law.

He warned against human rights abuses in the clean energy sector and called for urgent emissions cuts, a fair transition from fossil fuels, and financial support for developing nations.

Guterres ended by praising Amnesty International’s work and encouraged continued global efforts to promote and protect human rights.
