NEW YORK: Zohran Mamdani, a Ugandan-born Muslim politician and former New York State Assembly member, has been elected Mayor of New York City, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent candidate, and Republican contender Curtis Sliwa.

The 34-year-old progressive Democrat’s victory marks a historic moment, making him the first Muslim and the youngest-ever mayor in New York City’s history. According to official results, voter turnout reached its highest level since 1969, with over two million New Yorkers casting their ballots.

Mamdani ran on a bold working-class agenda focused on affordable housing, rent control, free public transportation, universal childcare, and expanded social welfare programs funded by higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy. His campaign struck a chord with young voters, immigrants, and working families frustrated with economic inequality and rising living costs.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1991, Mamdani is the son of renowned filmmaker Mira Nair, who was once nominated for an Oscar, and Mahmood Mamdani, a professor at Columbia University. His multicultural background,  Indian heritage, African roots, and an immigrant upbringing in Queens, has shaped his vision of inclusive governance. His wife, Rama Dawaji, is a Syrian-American artist, and together they have been vocal advocates for social justice, racial equality, and immigrant rights.

A self-described democratic socialist, Mamdani has been outspoken on international issues, including his support for Palestinian rights. He previously made headlines for stating that if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces international arrest warrants, visits New York, he would seek his detention in accordance with international law.

Despite opposition from prominent figures such as former President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, Mamdani’s message of solidarity and economic fairness resonated strongly across the city. His victory is being celebrated worldwide as a symbol of diversity and progress in American politics, with many analysts calling it a turning point for the Democratic Party’s left-wing movement.
