56 Pakistanis jailed in Sri Lanka back home

Say interior minister personally made their return possible with financial assistance of Aleem Khan.

ISLAMABAD: As many as 56 Pakistanis who remained in jail in Sri Lanka for many years have returned to Pakistan.

The 51 men and 5 women belonging to different parts of Pakistan had gone to Sri Lanka on different occasions and were arrested and put in jail for different crimes in that country.

After arriving in Pakistan, they told media that their release was made possible by personal efforts of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. They said that relatives of some of the prisoners in Sri Lanka approached the interior minister and informed him about the issue. The interior minister took personal interest and approached the high commissioner of Sri Lanka in Islamabad and requested him to resolve the issue.

The high commissioner took up the matter with authorities in Sri Lanka which led to the release of the 56 Pakistanis from different jails.

After their release, the Pakistanis were unable to afford the transportation cost to return home. To help the prisoners return home, politician Aleem Khan provided financial help through which a chartered plane was arranged to bring back the Pakistanis.

After arriving in Pakistan, they thanked the minister and Mr Aleem Khan for their efforts and financial assistance to make their return home possible.
