ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi has stated that he was playing all his constitutional roles as head of the state and wanted general elections should be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the National Assembly.
His statement to a private TV channel came after Aleema Khan, sister of former prime minister Imran Khan, complained in Lahore a day earlier that her jailed brother was disappointed with Alvi for his failure to ensure the elections on time.
The president said that under the constitution, general elections should be held in 90 days of the dissolution of the National Assembly. Under this, the elections should be held by November 6th, 2023.
He said he had written a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan to ensure that the elections are not delayed beyond the time frame.
Timely holding of the elections would ensure political stability in the country besides giving an opportunity to all political parties to take part in the election process, he added.
According to the statement issued by the President House, Article 48’s section 5 empowers the president to announce a date for the general elections within 90 days of the dissolution of the lower house of parliament.
