Modi govt says mosque demolished in a campaign to remove illegal structure from forest reserve.
Hindu zealots have been given a free hand since Modi came to power to target Muslims and demolish their worship places. Recently, the Modi regime inaugurated the Ram temple constructed at the site of centuries-old Babri Mosque in Ayodhya city.
In continuation of its campaign against the Muslims and their heritage and in complete disregard to their religious rights, the Hindutva Modi regime today patronized the demolition of another centuries-old mosque in the capital New Delhi. Local Muslims said Masjid Akhonji in New Delhi was 600 years old and there were also 22 students enrolled in its boarding madrassa.
The mosque located in Mehrauli forest was demolished by using bulldozers and other heavy machinery during what the government said a drive to remove illegal structure from the forest reserve.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi led consecration of a grand temple to the Hindu god Lord Ram at the site of Babri Mosque on Jan 22 this year.
Meanwhile, Hindu activist groups have also laid claim to the disputed Gyanvapi mosque in the Indian holy city of Varanasi which they say was built over a Hindu temple during the Muslim Mughal empire centuries ago. Hindu worshippers entered the Gyanvapi mosque on Thursday to pray after a local court them permission to do so, according to a report.
