Journalist killed on World Press Freedom Day

Muhammad Siddiq Mengal, president of Khuzdar press club, had survived an armed attack four months back, say police.

QUETTA: While the world was observing the press freedom day on Friday, a senior journalist and press club president was killed in a remote controlled device in Khuzdar town of Balochistan.

Police said that 10 people were injured in the blast and later two of them also died in hospital. The person targetted in the blast was identified as Muhammad Siddiq Mengal, a journalist and president of the Khuzdar press club. He was going to a university from his home when he was targetted and killed.

The police said that about four months back Mengal was fired upon by unknown armed men but at that time he had remained safe.

Killing of the journalist on the International Press Freedom Day showed the precarious situation in which media persons work in Pakistan.

Scores of journalists are killed every year and many more threatened and intimidated but the government has failed to take steps for their safety.
