Imran sentenced to 14 years in jail in 190m pound case

Accountability court orders govt to take over Al-Qadir university.

RAWALPINDI: An accountability court on Friday sentenced former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan to 14 years imprisonment and his wife Bushra Bibi to seven years in jail  in the 190 million pound corruption case.

Accountability Court Judge Nasir Javed Rana announced the verdict in the 190 million pounds case against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in the Adiala jail.

The court also fined Imran Rs1 million and Bushra Bibi Rs0.5 million. The government was ordered to take Al-Qadir University into possession.

Strict security arrangements had been made inside and outside the Adiala Jail. In addition to women police, plainclothes personnel had also been deployed in the whole area.

The hearing of the 190 million pound reference against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in connection with the ase, also known as Al-Qadir Trust University case, was completed in about a year with more than 100 hearings by the accountability court.

The court had reserved its verdict in  the 190 million pound case on December 18, 2024, and had set December 23 as the date for announcement of the verdict. However, the judgement was not announced on December 23, and the second date was fixed for January 6, 2025.

On that day, the ruling was again postponed to January 13. Even on Jan 13, the verdict could not be pronounced and the court set the date of on January 17.

The National Accountability Bureau had instituted the case accusing the PTI founder PTI Imran Khan of entering into a secret deal with property tycoon Malik Riaz and getting it approved from the federal cabinet without revealing its contents to the ministers through his influence of former Advisor on Accountability Mirza Shahzad Akbar who signed the secret deed of the National Crime Agency on December 6, 2019.

In 2019, property tycoon Malik Riaz got assets worth 190 million pounds confiscated by the National Crime Agency in the UK. The money was to be transferred to the government of Pakistan. However, the then prime minister Imran Khan through a deal with Malik Riaz received land on which through a trust he set up the so-called Al-Qadir University, causing a loss of 190m pounds to the national kitty.

Bushra Bibi played an important role in Imran’s illegal activities, said NAB.
