ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), Mehmood Khan Achakzai, has been formally nominated as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan.
According to official sources, a formal application for Achakzai’s nomination was submitted to the office of the Secretary of the National Assembly by senior opposition leaders, including Chief Whip Aamir Dogar, former Speaker Asad Qaiser, and other prominent members of the opposition alliance.
The nomination was endorsed by 74 opposition lawmakers, who signed the document supporting Achakzai’s appointment. However, three members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) — namely Ali Afzal Sahi, Umar Farooq, and Sahibzada Mehboob Sultan — could not sign the application as they are currently out of the country.
The Special Secretary of the National Assembly confirmed that the nomination request had been officially received, while the Adviser’s Office subsequently entered it into the official record by assigning a diary number for administrative processing.
Following the completion of all formalities and verification procedures, Mehmood Khan Achakzai is expected to assume his duties as the new Leader of the Opposition in the lower house of Parliament.
