DHAKA: An enraged mob stormed the Bangladesh National Parliament on Sunday following the funeral of prominent student leader Usman Hadi, triggering serious security concerns in the capital.

Protesters surrounded the parliament building, forced their way inside, raised slogans, and staged violent demonstrations. The crowd also demanded the implementation of Sharia law in the country.

Usman Hadi, a key figure in the student movement that played a central role in the July uprising which toppled the government of Sheikh Hasina, had succumbed to injuries sustained in a targeted gun attack.

He was the spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha, a political platform formed by student leaders, and had expressed intentions to contest the upcoming general elections as an independent candidate.

According to reports, Hadi was shot by unidentified assailants in Dhaka last Friday and was critically injured. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital where he underwent surgery. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to Singapore for advanced medical treatment, where he died during treatment.

Bangladeshi authorities confirmed that investigations into the assassination attempt are ongoing, and 14 suspects have been taken into custody so far.

A day earlier, demonstrators had also staged protests outside the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, condemning the attack and demanding justice.
