Army Deploys Four Engineering Battalions in Flood-Hit Areas

ISPR chief says additional units were mobilized, bridges rebuilt, and roads reopened.

ISLAMABAD: In response to the widespread destruction caused by floods, the Pakistan Army has deployed four engineering battalions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

During a joint media briefing, Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar, DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, and the NDMA Chairman highlighted the scale of devastation caused by monsoon rains, floods and cloudbursts.

The DG ISPR stated that road infrastructure in KP has been severely damaged. Two engineering battalions have been stationed in KP and two in Gilgit-Baltistan, while three medical units are also operational in both regions. More than 6,000 injured people have received treatment at Army medical camps so far.

He added that, under the directives of Army Chief General Asim Munir, additional units were mobilized, bridges were rebuilt, and roads reopened. Relief supplies, including food rations, are being delivered both by road and helicopter. In KP alone, 90 roads have been destroyed, with restoration efforts underway.

The NDMA Chairman revealed that recent monsoon rains have claimed 670 lives, while nearly 1,000 others were injured.

Around 25,000 people have been rescued through joint efforts, while search and rescue operations for missing persons continue. Gilgit-Baltistan has been the worst hit due to cloudbursts, with heavy losses to infrastructure in the northern areas and KP.

Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar said that the government has been providing updates to provinces and institutions from day one, and assured that relief and rehabilitation efforts are being carried out on priority.
