Avalanche Kills Nine Family Members Amid Heavy Snowfall

ISLAMABAD: Nine members of a family lost their lives when an avalanche hit a house in Serigal, a remote mountainous area of Damel in Tehsil Drosh of Chitral, after heavy snowfall on Friday.

The avalanche struck the house of Bacha Khan, son of Gul Muhammad, in the mountainous area of Sargil, Damel. At the time of the incident, 10 people were present inside the house.

Rescue 1122 and local volunteers retrieved nine bodies and rescued an eight-year-old boy who was found alive.

Meanwhile, northern parts of Pakistan received heavy snowfall that blocked roads in different areas. The heavy snowfall in Murree Punjab crippled the local system with roads closed, communication networks disrupted, and traffic severely impacted. The snowfall has been continuous for the past 24 hours, accumulating around 2 feet of snow, which has paralyzed daily life. Additionally, a prolonged power outage is also ongoing.

Multiple roads in Murree, including the road to Jhika Gali, have been completely blocked due to snow, and several vehicles are stranded. Entry of new vehicles from Rawalpindi and Islamabad into Murree has been restricted.

Commissioner Rawalpindi, Engineer Amir Khattak, stated that the continuous snowfall has made communication difficult. However, the district administration, police, Rescue 1122, and the Pakistan Army are actively engaged in relief operations. He further mentioned that stranded tourists are being shifted to safe locations. The Chief Minister of Punjab is personally monitoring the situation, urging tourists to avoid unnecessary travel.
