Brazil has launched nationwide celebrations to mark one year until the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, as anticipation builds for the tournament’s historic South American debut.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 will run from June 24 to July 25, 2027, across eight Brazilian host cities. The tournament will be the first Women’s World Cup staged in South America.

Celebrations began with Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue illuminated with the tournament’s branding and a “one year to go” message. Street-art murals also appeared across all eight host cities.

The host cities include Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo. Additional landmarks across the country are expected to be illuminated as part of the celebrations.

Nationwide Activities Build Excitement

Brazil has organized community events to engage fans ahead of the tournament. In Brasília, organizers screened a documentary highlighting pioneers of Brazilian women’s football for children.

FIFA officials also marked the milestone internationally. The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 executive team gathered at the FIFA Museum in Miami during a media networking event.

The delegation is currently in the United States as part of FIFA’s Observer Programme for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

“Today marks one year until the first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup in South America kicks off,” FIFA Chief Football Officer Jill Ellis said.

She said Brazil would host “the greatest Women’s World Cup in history.”

Football Legends Highlight Lasting Legacy

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 will feature 64 matches across eight stadiums, according to FIFA27 Executive Director of Legacy and Stakeholder Affairs Aline Pellegrino.

Pellegrino said the tournament aims to elevate women’s football and leave a lasting legacy throughout South America.

Brazilian football icon Marta also expressed her excitement in a video message. She said hosting the tournament at home could inspire future generations.

“It’s what we’ve always dreamed about: to see women’s football in Brazil and the stadiums full,” Marta said.

Former Brazil internationals Formiga and Cristiane also welcomed the upcoming tournament, describing it as a transformative moment for the sport in Brazil.

Brazil’s Minister of Sport, Paulo Henrique Cordeiro, said the government remains committed to ensuring the tournament delivers a lasting impact on women’s football nationwide.

Teams Secure Qualification Spots

Fourteen countries, including host nation Brazil, have already secured qualification for the 32-team tournament.

The remaining places will be decided through ongoing continental competitions. FIFA will conduct the final draw later this year to determine the group-stage matchups.

Ticket information for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 is expected to be released soon as Brazil prepares to welcome fans from around the world.
