Student Protests Spread Across India Despite Police Crackdown

NEW DELHI: Student protests against alleged exam paper leaks and irregularities have spread across multiple Indian states despite a police crackdown, with demonstrators continuing to demand the resignations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

According to media reports and videos shared on social media, protests are ongoing in Kerala, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Gujarat, Bihar and West Bengal. Demonstrators allege excessive use of force by security personnel, including baton charges and tear gas.

Reports also said opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was detained while supporting the protesters, while Priyanka Gandhi condemned the police response, accusing authorities of using excessive force against students.

Amnesty International said images from the protests raise concerns about the suppression of peaceful dissent in India.
