PESHAWAR: A session was held by civil society organization Blueveins on Tuesday where journalists were urged to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use on human health and make the country tobacco free.
Qamar Nasim, Program Head of Blueveins, emphasized that tobacco is killing millions of people worldwide every year, despite a steady reduction in tobacco use globally. He advised smokers to either quit smoking or prepare for the increased risk of smoke-related illnesses, including mouth cancer.
Nasim demanded that the government continue measures to raise awareness among the public and promote a smoke-free society. He called upon every Pakistani to participate in the campaign to safeguard the health of the new generation.
Media Coordinator Sana Khan stated that 90% of lung cancers are caused by smoking, which also adversely affects the health of non-smokers. She emphasized the duty of non-smokers to encourage people around them to quit smoking permanently.
She also highlighted the tactics of tobacco companies, which introduce new products, such as nicotine pouches and e-cigarettes, to lure consumers specially the youth.
Journalist M. Irshad Ullah shed light on the negative impact of ‘gutka’, a chewable tobacco product, which can lead to mouth cancer. He urged the media, parents, teachers, and society to take the issue seriously and play a role in eradicating drugs from society.
He explained that smoking and excessive alcohol consumption increase the risk of developing mouth cancer, which can occur in any part of the mouth, tongue, lips, neck, or throat. He warned that mouth cancer can be easily ignored in its early stages.
The session concluded with a pledge from media stakeholders to support the cause and highlight tobacco-related issues as a priority.
