Caretakers approve deployment of army for election security
Cabinet gives approval to a summary seeking deployment of 277,000 troops across the country.
ISLAMABAD: The caretaker federal cabinet on Tuesday approved a summary for the deployment of army troops for security during the forthcoming general elections.
The summary seeking requisition of 277,000 army officers and personnel was moved by the Ministry of Interior.
The caretaker cabinet at a meeting chaired by caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar approved the summary.
According to media reports, besides the army, contingents of FC and police would also be deployed on security duty during the elections to the national and provincial assemblies.
The army’s quick response teams will be at a standby in sensitive areas of the country to meet any emergency situation.
It may be noted that the Election Commission of Pakistan is all set to hold the general elections on February 8 and in this regard it has made all the needed arrangements.
Because of the recent rise in terror activities, especially in the provinces of Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan, the interior ministry wanted to call out the army to help the ECP hold the elections in a peaceful manner.
In the past too, army was deployed in the country during general elections.
