KUALA LUMPUR: In a major diplomatic breakthrough, Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate ceasefire following successful peace talks held in Malaysia.
The agreement was announced during a joint press conference by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim alongside the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia.
Prime Minister Anwar stated that both nations will declare an unconditional ceasefire, set to take effect at midnight local time. The two countries have also agreed to engage in direct dialogue to resolve their disputes through peaceful negotiations.
U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier called on both nations to maintain peace and avoid further escalation, expressing support for a diplomatic resolution.
The ceasefire has been welcomed by regional organizations and international observers, who praised Malaysia’s role in mediating the conflict. ASEAN representatives called the agreement a “positive step toward long-term regional stability.”
Experts believe that continued dialogue and confidence-building measures will be essential to maintaining peace. Analysts have urged both nations to address underlying issues such as border disputes and security cooperation to prevent future flare-ups.
