Crises await Afghan nationals reaching home from Pakistan

Concerns being raised about future of thousands of children who were studying in Pakistan.

PESHAWAR: On the third day after the expiry of the deadline for voluntary repatriation of Afghan nationals, there was rush of people crossing into Afghanistan at the Torkham border.

According to reports, due to poor arrangements Afghan nationals entering their country were faced with chaos and crises. Taliban regime in Kabul had stated that temporary camps had been set up for the returnees but these camps lack basic facilities.

The Afghan nationals being deported include thousands of children and elderly people for whome their were no arrangements for schooling and healthcare.

Moreover, the Taliban have already restricted girls from attending schools and those who were studying in Pakistan would gave a very bleak future regarding their education in Afghanistan.

International humanitarian organizations and the UN agencies have so far been unable to put in place arrangements to help the returning Afghans in starting their new life without any major hardship back home.

One of the major reasons for this is Pakistan’s abrupt decision to expel such a huge number of people many of them had been living in Pakistan for years. They were given just four weeks to wrap up and go back or face imprisonment and forced deportation.

According to reports, thousands of illegal Afghans are returning to their homeland every day from Chaman and Torkham borders in Balochistan and KP.

Officials said that as many as 19344 Afghan nationals crossed the border to their country on Thursday.

Temporary transit camps for illegal foreign nationals have been set up in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan where food, bed and medical facilities have been made available.

Moreover, illegal Afghans are being rounded up in Punjab and Sindh as well. They are being kept at holding centers in different cities and then sent to KP and Balochistan for deportation.
