ATLANTA: Egypt’s FIFA World Cup journey ended in the Round of 16, but the team’s spirited performance against defending champions Argentina won widespread admiration from fans and neutrals alike.
After falling 3-2 in a dramatic contest, Egypt received a hero’s welcome when the squad returned to its hotel in Atlanta, where thousands of supporters gathered to applaud the players for their fighting display.
Egypt stunned Argentina by taking a two-goal lead before the South American giants mounted a comeback to secure a place in the quarter-finals. Despite the defeat, the Egyptians earned praise for pushing one of the tournament favourites to the limit.
The match was also overshadowed by controversy, with Egypt protesting several refereeing decisions, including the disallowing of a goal following a VAR review and appeals for fouls involving captain Mohamed Salah. Head coach Hossam Hassan also received a yellow card while protesting on the touchline.
For many supporters, however, the result was secondary. Egypt’s courageous performance against the reigning champions turned the team into one of the surprise stories of the tournament and earned them a standing ovation from their fans despite their elimination.
