ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s economy has suffered an estimated Rs 822 billion in damages as a result of the recent devastating monsoon floods, which have affected more than 6.5 million people across 70 districts nationwide.

According to official documents from the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs, the agriculture and infrastructure sectors have borne the brunt of the disaster.

The report describes the floods as among the most severe in the country’s history, causing extensive destruction to infrastructure, livelihoods, and essential public services.

Initial estimates had placed the economic losses at Rs 744 billion, but the figure has since been revised upward to Rs 822 billion following comprehensive assessments.

The floods have damaged a total of 229,763 houses. Of these, 59,258 homes were completely destroyed, while 170,505 sustained partial damage. In addition, the disaster has resulted in 1,037 deaths and 1,067 injuries across the affected areas.

Authorities warn that the full scale of the damage could further increase as assessments continue, particularly in remote and hard-to-reach regions. The government is coordinating relief and rehabilitation efforts, but officials acknowledge that rebuilding the affected communities will be a long and costly process.
