GAZA: A senior Hamas official has reaffirmed the group’s determination to retain full control over security affairs in the Gaza Strip, declaring that Hamas will not commit to disarming its armed factions.
This firm stance underscores the group’s insistence on maintaining its influence and authority in Gaza, despite growing international and regional pressures for demilitarization.
The official stated that any future security arrangements must acknowledge Hamas as the legitimate governing authority in Gaza, and that the group views its military capabilities as essential for defending the territory and its people.
“Disarming Hamas is not an option,” the official said, emphasizing that Hamas’s role goes beyond politics to ensuring security and resistance against external threats.
This declaration comes at a critical time, as diplomatic efforts continue to stabilize the region and calls intensify for a unified Palestinian security framework. Various international actors, including the United Nations and neighboring countries, have pushed for the disarmament of armed groups in Gaza as a prerequisite for lasting peace and reconstruction.
However, Hamas’s refusal to disarm poses significant challenges to these efforts. The group controls the Gaza Strip politically and militarily, and its armed wing remains a key player in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Analysts warn that any attempt to force disarmament could escalate tensions and undermine fragile ceasefire agreements.
Meanwhile, internal Palestinian reconciliation talks between Hamas and the rival Fatah movement have also been stalled, with security control and disarmament issues among the main sticking points.
As the international community seeks pathways to peace, Hamas’s position highlights the complex realities on the ground, where security, governance, and resistance are deeply intertwined.
