BUDAPEST: Hungary’s political landscape has undergone a dramatic shift after the opposition secured a surprising victory in the latest parliamentary elections, defeating the long-ruling government backed by the United States.
According to international media reports, the opposition party, Tisza Party, delivered an exceptional performance, clearly surpassing the ruling Fidesz party led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The unexpected outcome marks a significant turning point in the country’s political direction.
The opposition campaign was led by Péter Magyar, a former insider of the governing system, who gained widespread public support by promising sweeping reforms and a “new Hungary” with major institutional changes.
Following the early results, Viktor Orbán conceded defeat, stating that although the outcome was painful, he respects the will of the people and congratulates the winning party on its success.
It is noteworthy that Orbán had been in power for nearly 16 years, and his government had also enjoyed support from Donald Trump. The election result signals a potential shift in both domestic policies and Hungary’s international alignments.
