ISLAMABAD: A court has sentenced Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years imprisonment each in the Toshakhana 2 case.

Both were sentenced to 10 years under Section 409, along with an additional 7 years each under Sections 5, 2, and 47. The total sentence for each is 17 years, and both will have to pay a fine of 1.64 million rupees.

Special Judge Central Shah Rukh Arjmand delivered the verdict during a hearing held at Adiala Jail. This ruling comes after several postponements of the case hearing.

Meanwhile, authorities in Rawalpindi have extended Section 144 until December 24, imposing a ban on public gatherings, rallies and protests. This decision is aimed at maintaining law and order and preventing any possible unrest in the city.

The Toshakhana 2 case dates back to December 12, 2024, when charges were formally framed against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The investigation, initially handled by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), was transferred to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) after a Supreme Court ruling. The inquiry officially began on January 7, 2024, and was concluded by July 12, 2024.

The accused were arrested on July 13, 2024, and a formal reference was filed on August 20, 2024. Following legal proceedings, the first hearing took place on September 16, and on October 23, 2024, the Islamabad High Court granted bail to the accused under Section 4A.

The case revolves around allegations that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi undervalued gifts they received from the Toshakhana, including earrings, a necklace, two rings and watches. The gifts, purchased from the Bulgari company, were reportedly undervalued to conceal their true worth. Investigators estimate the total value of the gifts at 3.8 million euros, which is more than 71 million rupees.

However, the accused declared the value of two of the items at 5.8 million rupees and paid 2.9 million rupees to keep them. The reference in the case was filed on January 7, 2024.
