NEW DELHI: Indian farmers’ organizations have announced nationwide protests against a recently agreed trade deal with the United States, terming it unfair and harmful to the country’s agricultural sector.

Farmer leaders said the agreement grants excessive concessions to the US in agriculture, undermining the interests of Indian farmers. The powerful farmers’ alliance Samyukt Kisan Morcha has declared a series of protests in the coming days, including a nationwide strike on February 12.

Reacting to the deal, farmer leaders described it as one-sided and unjust. According to a report by The Times of India, there is widespread anger and disappointment among India’s farming community over the agreement with the United States.

Farmers’ organizations accused the Modi government of incompetence, calling the deal a “surrender” to the US. They warned that the agreement would further increase pressure on India’s agricultural sector.

The organizations have cautioned that if the deal is signed under the current terms, intense protests will erupt across the country. They have also demanded the resignation of India’s Commerce Minister.

Earlier, the US President had announced that an agreement had been reached with India on the trade deal.
