JI not allowed to hold Gaza march in Islamabad

Police say Section 144 is already imposed in federal capital under which holding rallies is not allowed.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad capital territory administration has refused to allow Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) to hold a Gaza rally in the capital, citing imposition of Section 144.

The JI had set up a camp to mobilize people to attend the rally, but police dismantled the camp and arrested a number of JI activists, a spokesman for the party said on Saturday.

Local JI leader Mian Aslam said that the police clashed with his party’s workers on Srinagar Highway and beat up many of them. Eyewitnesses said that the police used year gas shell to disperse the protesters who in return pelted police with stones. 

The busy artery remained blocked for hours till the police dispersed the JI supporters and retorted traffic. The protesters said that they wanted to express solidarity with the people of Palestine but the capital administration not only disallowed them but also used force to disperse them.

Mian Aslam said his party had been raising voice against the Israeli atrocities on the people of Palestine and continuous air strikes on the enclave. The people of Palestine need help from the Muslim Ummah, but the rulers in Pakistan were even not ready to allow a peaceful protest in support of the Palestinians.
