Major UK Cabinet Reshuffle After Angela Rayner’s Resignation

LONDON: Prime Minister Keir Starmer has carried out a significant cabinet reshuffle following the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, who stepped down over a controversy linked to underpaid stamp duty during a past property purchase.

David Lammy, formerly the Foreign Secretary, has been appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary. Yvette Cooper has been promoted to Foreign Secretary, taking over Lammy’s previous role, while Shabana Mahmood becomes the new Home Secretary, replacing Cooper.

This reshuffle marks a historic moment, as for the first time, three of the UK’s most senior government posts — Chancellor, Foreign Secretary, and Home Secretary — are held by women.

Other key changes include Steve Reed’s appointment as Housing Secretary, Pat McFadden taking charge of the Department for Work and Pensions with additional responsibility for skills, Liz Kendall becoming Science and Technology Secretary, Peter Kyle moving to Business Secretary, and Douglas Alexander taking on the role of Scotland Secretary.

The reshuffle underscores Starmer’s effort to stabilize his government and strengthen its leadership after the sudden departure of one of his key deputies.
