May 9 attackers will be brought to justice: army

Says some elements trying to defame military by spreading fake news on social media

RAWALPINDI: Participants of a corps commanders’ conference here on Tuesday announced that in accordance with the resolve of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, perpetrators of May 9 arson attacks on military installations will be brought to justice at all costs.

According to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations, the conference chaired by army chief Gen Asim Munir paid tributes to martyrs of the army. They said a large number of personnel of the army and other law enforcement agencies laid down their lives while protecting the nation and ensuring peace in the country.

The participants expressed concerns over propaganda and smear campaign aimed to creating divisions among the nation by miscreants.

They said the army had had nothing to do with the recently-held general elections and despite many issues provided support and a safe environment during the process. The participants also expressed concerns over spread of fake news by anti-state elements in order to spread despondency and mistrust among the citizens. Especially some elements were using social media to spread propaganda against the army.

It was resolved that strict legal action would be taken against all those who planned, facilitated or executed the May 9 incidents and disrespected heroes of the nation and martyrs in accordance with the resolve expressed by the prime minister.
