Muslims allowed to use loudspeakers for Azan in New York

Relaxation given for Friday prayers and Azan for breaking fast in Ramazan, says mayor.

NEW YORK: Muslims in the New York city of the USA would have the liberty of using loudspeakers for Azan (call to prayers) in mosques on specific days.

This has been announced by New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

The mayor said that under new rules and regulations the Muslim community in the city could use loudspeakers for Maghrib Azan and Friday sermons in the month of Ramazan without seeking any prior permission.

He said the objective of this relaxation was to ensure equal rights to followers of all faiths in performance of their religious duties in the city.

Speaking at a press conference, Mayor Adams said that Friday was a sacred day in Islam and in Ramazan Muslims keep fast and break it at sunset for whole month.

Under the new rules, mosques would not need to seek permission for using loudspeakers for Friday sermons abd Azan for breaking fast in Ramazan.

The mayor said that for long it had been felt that the Muslim community had no freedom to call for prayers using loudspeakers in their mosques, and now we have removed this restriction.

However, the New York police community affairs department will devise guidelines for using the devise for Azan and Friday sermons in Ramazan in coordination with the management of the mosques.

It would also be ensured that the devices for calling Azan would be placed at suitable places.

Meanwhile, the elders of the Muslim community in the city have welcomed the announcement of the city mayor.
