ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office has dismissed reports suggesting that the country is considering recognizing the Taliban government in Afghanistan, calling them “speculative and baseless.”

During a weekly press briefing, Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated that no decision has been made regarding the recognition of the Taliban regime. He noted that terrorist safe havens in Afghanistan remain a constant concern for Pakistan.

He also said that consultations are ongoing between the foreign ministries of Pakistan and Afghanistan regarding the scheduling of an official visit by the Afghan Foreign Minister.

The spokesperson confirmed that the June 30 deadline for the return of registered Afghan refugees has passed. However, proposals to extend this deadline have been submitted to the government, and a final decision is pending. He emphasized that any decision regarding an extension or further restrictions will be made by the Ministry of Interior and relevant state institutions.

Commenting on the recent visit by Pakistan’s Interior Minister to Afghanistan, the spokesperson termed it highly significant. Detailed discussions on security and counter-terrorism cooperation were held with the Afghan counterpart.

The issue of the extradition of TTP and other terrorists was also raised, and the Afghan leadership responded positively to Pakistan’s concerns.

On relations with Iran, the spokesperson stated that Pakistan values its ties with Iran based on mutual cooperation and people-to-people contacts. He added that both countries are engaged in consultations regarding high-level visits. The previously reported date of July 26 for the Iranian President’s visit was speculative and not officially confirmed. A mutually agreed date will be announced soon.

The spokesperson reiterated that Pakistan is open to meaningful dialogue with India on all issues, including the Kashmir dispute. However, India’s delaying tactics are hindering the resolution process.

Pakistan has full confidence in its defensive capabilities and will respond robustly to any aggression. He also confirmed that no formal mediation offer has been received from the United States, despite widespread speculation.
