ISLAMABAD: The All Parties Conference (APC) organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Aain (Movement for the Protection of Constitution) has called for the repeal of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
A joint declaration issued after the APC stated that human rights and the parliamentary democratic system have been completely undermined in the country. The declaration emphasized the urgent need for a new Charter of Democracy and called on all political forces to reach a national consensus.
The conference also urged a comprehensive dialogue on the situations in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, aiming to find long-term political solutions.
Among the key demands was the abolishment of the 26th Amendment, along with legislation to ensure direct voting by the public for Senate elections.
Prominent political figure Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar addressed the conference, stating that the current system seeks to eliminate all opposition. According to him, no segment of society is content. Businesspeople are fleeing the country, and 45% of Pakistanis are living below the poverty line.
The 26th Constitutional Amendment, passed in 2019, had increased the number of seats for the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in the national and provincial legislatures. Critics now argue that it failed to bring meaningful representation or development and that its continuation serves more as a symbolic gesture than a practical reform.
