ISLAMABAD: Pakistan, in partnership with the Republic of Korea, is hosting the two-day third United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Preparatory Meeting at the Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS), National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in Islamabad.
Held under the theme “Towards a Safer and More Effective Peacekeeping: Use of Technology and Integrated Approach,” the meeting has brought together senior officials from the United Nations, including Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, and Mr. Atul Khare, Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, as well as dignitaries from the Government of Pakistan and peacekeeping stakeholders from around the world.
Day one featured in-depth panel discussions on the evolving nature of peacekeeping operations and the role of emerging technologies in ensuring the safety, security, and effectiveness of peacekeepers on the ground.
Participants deliberated on enhancing operational capacity through innovation, addressing threats in complex environments, and fostering integrated approaches for sustainable peace.
The meeting also spotlights the critical contributions of regional and cross-regional organizations in supporting United Nations peacekeeping efforts.
Discussions emphasized collaborative strategies to meet the growing challenges faced by peacekeeping missions globally.
With over 235,000 peacekeepers deployed across 48 UN missions and 181 having laid down their lives in service to global peace, Pakistan’s role as one of the top troop-contributing countries was highlighted throughout the day.
