Pakistan Reaffirms Inclusion For Persons with Disabilities

ISLAMABAD: As the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Pakistan’s leadership has reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights, dignity and full participation of persons with disabilities across all sectors of national life.

President Asif Ali Zardari, in his message, reaffirmed the state’s resolve to create an inclusive society where persons with disabilities are empowered and supported through improved accessibility, education, healthcare, mobility and employment opportunities. He noted initiatives such as the disability logo on national identity cards, streamlined certification processes, expanded social protection programmes and strengthened community-based rehabilitation.

The President stressed that accessible infrastructure and barrier-free public services are essential for a fair society, urging citizens, institutions and civil society to work collectively to remove physical, social and attitudinal obstacles.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif highlighted this year’s theme — “Inclusion and Social Development of Persons with Disabilities” — and reaffirmed that the Constitution guarantees equal rights for all. He said persons with disabilities are an important part of Pakistan’s social and cultural fabric, and that physical limitations do not diminish human capability or fundamental rights.

The Prime Minister pointed to ongoing efforts including disability rights legislation, the work of the Disability Rights Council (CRPD), regular medical assessments, disability certificates, assistive devices, skills training, job quotas and workplace accessibility improvements.

While acknowledging progress, PM Sharif emphasized the need for stronger institutional capacity and expanded measures to address remaining challenges.

He called on provincial governments, educational institutions, private organizations and civil society to ensure meaningful representation and inclusion at every level.

Both leaders urged the nation to renew its commitment to eliminating discrimination and building a society where persons with disabilities can fully contribute to national development. They emphasized that inclusion, accessibility and equal opportunity are essential pillars of a just and forward-looking Pakistan.
