Pakistan seeks strict implementation of Indus Water Treaty

Permanent representative to UN Munir Akram says Pakistan had launched Living Indus Projects yo avoid water crisis

NEW YORK: As the world faces water crisis, strict implementation of the water treaty signed between Pakistan and India in 1960 should be ensured to save the two countries from a draught-like situation.

The demand came from Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations Ambassador Munir Akram while speaking at the world forum.

It may be noted that the  Indus Water Treaty was signed between Pakistan and India under which the right to utilize major rivers flowing through the two South Asian countries was acknowledged and guaranteed.

However, India has been blatantly violating the treaty by constructing dams and other reservoirs on the rivers which were given under the exclusive use of Pakistan under the treaty.

Addressing the UN Security Council, Ambassador Munir Akram said Pakistan aims to reinvigorate the Indus River basin which provides food security to over 225 million people.

He said that to this end, Pakistan has launched the multi-dimensional Living Indus projects.
