Pakistan to Receive First Chinese-Designed Submarine in 2026: Naval Chief

KARACHI: Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf has announced that Pakistan will take delivery of its first Chinese-designed submarine in 2026, marking a major step forward in Pakistan’s naval modernization program.

In an interview with Chinese state media, Admiral Ashraf said that Pakistan is deepening its cooperation with China in fields such as artificial intelligence, unmanned systems, and electronic warfare.

He noted that Chinese defence equipment has consistently proven to be modern, reliable, and effective.

The new submarine is part of a $5 billion agreement for eight Hangor-class submarines, which are being built under a joint production arrangement. Four submarines will be constructed in China, while the remaining four will be assembled in Pakistan, a move aimed at strengthening local technical expertise and self-reliance.

All eight submarines are expected to join Pakistan’s naval fleet by 2028, significantly boosting the country’s surveillance, deterrence, and defence capabilities in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Admiral Ashraf emphasized that the project will enhance Pakistan’s ability to safeguard its maritime interests and maintain regional stability.
