UNITED NATIONS: At the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan has called for an urgent end to escalating violence in Sudan and stressed the need for a renewed, Sudanese-owned and Sudanese-led political process to restore peace in the conflict-hit country.

The appeal was made by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad during a Security Council session on the deteriorating situation in Sudan.

He strongly condemned attacks carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) against civilians and civilian infrastructure, warning that the situation carries an imminent risk of mass atrocities.

Ambassador Ahmad urged the RSF to avoid further escalation and to fully comply with international humanitarian law, emphasizing the protection of civilian lives as a priority.

He also raised concern over the growing use of drones and advanced weaponry in the conflict, noting that it has increased civilian casualties, disrupted humanitarian assistance, and raised the risk of wider regional instability.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s principled stance, he stressed that Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions must be safeguarded at all costs.

He further stated that there is no military solution to the conflict, adding that peace in Sudan is closely tied to stability in the broader African and Arab regions.

Ambassador Ahmad described the restoration of stability in Sudan as a collective international responsibility, calling for sustained global engagement.

He concluded by reiterating Pakistan’s continued support for United Nations-led efforts and regional initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and guiding Sudan back toward peace and constitutional order.
