UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has expressed deep concern over the growing stockpiles of modern weapons and ammunition in Afghanistan, calling them a serious threat to regional peace and stability.
Speaking at the UN, he urged the international community to take urgent action to stop the illegal transfer of advanced arms to terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan.
Ahmad warned that these weapons are being used by militant organizations not only to destabilize Afghanistan but also to target Pakistani citizens and security forces, resulting in the loss of thousands of innocent lives.
He said that these groups continue to receive financial and logistical support from international networks, which enables them to expand their destructive operations.
The Pakistani envoy called on Afghanistan’s interim authorities to fulfill their commitments and take responsibility for improving law and order in the country. He also stressed the need for a modern global arms control system that uses new technology to prevent the illegal movement of weapons across borders.
Ahmad cautioned that if immediate steps are not taken, the consequences could be severe for the entire region, as terrorist activities may continue to spread. He urged all countries to work together to find a collective solution to this growing security challenge.
