NEW DELHI: The mutilated bodies of a young Pakistani couple were discovered in the desert region of India’s Jaisalmer district, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
According to a report by the BBC, local authorities stated that the couple had allegedly crossed the border illegally from Pakistan into India and succumbed to extreme heat and dehydration in the desert.
The deceased have been identified as 17-year-old Ravi Kumar and 16-year-old Shanti Bai, residents of Ghotki district in Sindh province. Their bodies were found under a tree, and police believe they died approximately 8 to 10 days prior to being discovered.
Police also recovered Pakistani national identity cards and SIM cards from the site. The exact cause of death will be confirmed following a postmortem examination.
Residents of the village Ghulam Hussain Laghari in Ghotki said the couple had left their home around 12 days ago without informing their families. Their whereabouts remained unknown until news of the bodies surfaced on social media.
Ravi Kumar’s father, Diwan Ji, told media that he learned about the deaths through social media reports and later confirmed the identities of his son and daughter-in-law. The final rites of the couple were reportedly conducted in India.
