Pakistani poet gets lifetime achievement award from US president

NEW YORK: American poet and intellectual of Pakistani origin Raies Warsi has been awarded lifetime achievement award by US President Joe Biden.

Warsi is the president of Urdu Center in New York. He has been working tirelessly for the last 35 years for the promotion of the Urdu language and literature at the international level. 

The presidential award was presented to Warsi by New York assembly member Jessica Gonzalez at a function held here yesterday.

Versus also credited with holding a first conference to step the need for including Urdu among the official languages of the United Nations. In that conference Urdu poet and literary figures from India and Pakistan highlight the importance of the Urdu language.

It is important to note here that Warsi has already been given the Pride of Pakistan award by the Ministry of Overseas Pakistan.

Raies Warsi’s ghazals have been sung by famous singers from Pakistan and India including Ghulam Ali, Ustad Zakir Ali Khan, Amanat Ali Khan, Hamid Ali Khan, Humira Channa, Parvez Mehdi, Rafaqaat Ali Khan, Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargaram.
