NEW YORK: Pakistan’s journey of resilience, progress and commitment to peace was highlighted at a Pakistan Day ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations.
The event, jointly organized by Pakistan’s UN Mission and the Consulate General in New York, began with the hoisting of the national flag by Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, followed by the national anthem.
Addressing the ceremony, Ambassador Ahmad reflected on Pakistan’s evolution over the past eight decades, describing it as a story of determination and hope despite numerous challenges. He emphasized Pakistan’s role as a responsible state contributing to regional and global peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
The ambassador outlined Pakistan’s journey in three phases. He first recalled the historic struggle for independence, praising the democratic and peaceful nature of the movement under the leadership of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He paid tribute to the sacrifices made for the creation of the country.
Discussing the post-independence period, he highlighted Pakistan’s achievements in diverse fields including arts, literature, sports, and women’s empowerment. He also underscored the country’s strong defense capabilities and its status as the only nuclear power in the Islamic world.
Ambassador Ahmad commended the armed forces for their role in safeguarding the country and combating terrorism. He noted that Pakistan has successfully countered both internal and external threats while maintaining its sovereignty.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s position on Jammu and Kashmir, he reiterated continued moral, political, and diplomatic support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination, calling the issue a key component of Pakistan’s foreign policy.
The Ambassador also highlighted Pakistan’s growing diplomatic engagement and its commitment to building constructive international partnerships through a balanced foreign policy.
Looking ahead, he acknowledged ongoing challenges, including regional instability and terrorism, and called for national unity to build a stronger and more prosperous Pakistan.
