VIENNA: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed serious concerns over India’s violation of the Indus Waters Treaty and warned of water being used as a geopolitical weapon.

He made the remarks during a special United Nations event titled “Sustainable Development: Pathway to Global Peace and Prosperity” held in Vienna.

The prime minister highlighted the global challenges of geopolitical tension and climate change, emphasizing that sustainable development is the key to ensuring global peace.

He noted that although Pakistan contributes less than one percent to global carbon emissions, it remains one of the countries most affected by climate disasters, recalling the devastating 2022 floods.

The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of empowering youth, noting that Pakistan’s young population is its greatest asset and opportunity for development.

He called for a stronger, more active United Nations aligned with the demands of a multipolar world and urged that the benefits of advanced technology and artificial intelligence should reach all of humanity, not just select groups.

“Instead of just applying temporary remedies, we must address the root causes of global problems,” he added.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also attended the event which  featured the signing of multiple cooperation agreements between Pakistan and UN agencies.

These included the UNIDO Country Partnership Program for Pakistan (2025–30), the UNODC Country Program, and collaboration between the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Oncology Lahore (INMOL) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
