NAROWAL: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for urgent measures to increase Pakistan’s water storage capacity to prevent future flood devastation.
Chairing a high-level meeting on the recent floods, the Prime Minister emphasized the construction of major projects like Diamer Bhasha and Mohmand Dams to control overflowing rivers and protect communities.
Highlighting additional measures, he pointed out sites in Chiniot for water storage and proposed building small dams in northern areas to manage flash floods.
He expressed confidence that federal and provincial governments have the resources and capability to implement these initiatives effectively.
NDMA officials described this year’s monsoon as unusually intense, with unprecedented flood-related losses and high water levels in the Chenab, Sutlej, and Ravi rivers. The Prime Minister stressed that besides NDMA and PDMAs, all relevant departments must strengthen disaster preparedness.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz supported the initiative, pledging full rehabilitation of flood-affected areas and timely compensation for victims. She also underscored measures to combat waterborne diseases, including field hospitals and mobile clinics in the hardest-hit regions.
