Political parties urged to include press freedom in their manifestoes

Journalist bodies says without freedom of the press democracy cannot flourish.

ISLAMABAD: Without ensuring freedom of the press and freedom of expression, democracy can never flourish and neither rights ofvthe citizens can be guaranteed.

So it is imperative to strengthen laws and implement them to ensure freedom of the press.

In this regard, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) along with journalist organizations in Pakistan and Press Freedom Network called upon all political parties to commit to defending freedom of expression and protection of journalists in their manifestos before the upcoming general elections.

The RSF in a statement issued today said that working conditions for journalists in Pakistan was deteriorating with state abd non-state actors using pressure tactics and even force to impede freedom of the press.

It is equal to surrendering to the forces at the cost of freedom of the press and freedom of speech not to protect the journalists against such elements.

“Impunity for crimes against journalists and media is very high in Pakistan, which was among the five countries included in a pilot project of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity,” the statement said.
