CARACAS: Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, was rocked by two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude within seconds of each other, triggering widespread destruction and raising fears of significant loss of life.

Reports indicate that several buildings collapsed as terrified residents rushed out of homes and offices into the streets for safety.

The earthquakes struck at 6:04 p.m. local time west of Caracas, with tremors felt across Venezuela and as far away as Bogotá, the capital of neighboring Colombia.

Venezuela’s Interior Minister urged residents to evacuate buildings as a precaution and placed emergency response agencies on high alert.

Rescue teams have been deployed to affected areas, where concerns remain that people may be trapped beneath collapsed structures.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquakes have the potential to cause extensive casualties and economic losses. The agency estimated a 44 percent probability that the death toll could exceed 10,000, describing the situation as highly alarming.

Main International Airport Closed

Government official Rodriguez announced that Venezuela’s principal international gateway, Maiquetía International Airport, has been closed after sustaining significant earthquake damage.

Videos circulating shortly after the disaster showed passengers and airport staff evacuating terminals in panic, while large clouds of dust fell from ceilings during the tremors.

Authorities said assessments of the damage are underway and flight operations will remain suspended until further inspections are completed.

The earthquakes struck during a national holiday, when large numbers of people were at home, increasing concerns about potential casualties.

A state of emergency has been declared in affected regions, with hospitals, rescue services, and security forces placed on full alert. Initial reports also indicate disruptions to electricity and communication networks in several areas.

United States Offers Support

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and pledged assistance during the crisis.

In a statement posted on X, Landau said the United States stands with the people of Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes and remains in contact with local authorities to coordinate relief efforts.

U.S. officials said various agencies are working together to provide humanitarian assistance and assess the needs of those affected, while continuing to monitor the evolving situation.
