LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore has issued a detailed verdict in cases related to the May 9 riots, sentencing senior PTI leader Mian Mahmoodul Rasheed to a total of 33 years in prison along with a fine of Rs600,000.

The court released its written judgment in two cases concerning incidents of arson, vandalism, and torching of vehicles in Lahore’s Gulberg area on May 9.

After reviewing the evidence, the court acquitted 23 accused due to lack of proof, while seven accused, including senior PTI leaders, were convicted and awarded various prison terms.

According to the verdict, Rasheed was convicted under multiple sections of the law, with separate sentences awarded in each count, cumulatively amounting to 33 years of imprisonment, in addition to a monetary penalty.

The court also sentenced Dr Yasmin Rashid, Umar Sarfaraz Cheema, and Ejaz Chaudhry to 10 years in prison each.

The judgment stated that their presence in meetings related to conspiracy had been proven, and that, according to the prosecution, they played a role in inciting the public and fueling unrest that led to violence and arson.
