PTI stalwart leaves party, politics after repeated arrests

Party leader Fayazul Hassan Chohan also quit party

ISLAMABAD: PTI key leader and former federal minister for human rights Dr Shireen Mazari Tuesday announced quitting the Imran Khan-led party.

Addressing a press conference, she announced that she would not be part of the PTI or any other party from now onwards.

She said her husband had passed away five months ago. “When Dr Tabish was alive, I could have many things, as he was there for the children as well.

“My children, mother and health are now my priority,” she added.

The development came as the senior vice president of the former ruling party was arrested several times during the past few days following the May 9 riots.

Earlier, she was re-arrested after a Gujranwala court approved her bail in a case related to the vandalism and attacks on defence and public installations.

Observers termed the decision of Dr Mazari as a major setback for the PTI led by embattled Imran Khan.

Her departure comes as a number of PTI lawmakers and leaders have announced their decision to leave the party citing the arson attacks on military installations in the wake of Imran’s brief arrest on May 9.

Minutes after former federal minister Shireen Mazari announced to quit ‘active politics’ citing her family, mother and her own health as reasons, former Punjab minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan launched a scathing criticism on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for it anti-state policies.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday, he said he was saddened by the events of May 9.
