LAHORE: Claims circulating on social media that the Punjab government has decided to shut down all tuition centres across the province are false.
The education minister clarified that action will only be taken against unregistered academies that fail to meet safety standards.
The misleading claim surfaced after the collapse of a tuition centre building in Lahore last month, which killed 14 children. Social media posts alleged that Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat had ordered the closure of all tuition centres, particularly those operating in residential areas.
The minister has denied making any such announcement, saying only unregistered academies that fail to obtain mandatory fitness certificates and comply with safety regulations will face closure from September.
Speaking to the media on July 3, Hayat said the crackdown would target institutions that do not meet legal and safety requirements. He added that deputy commissioners are responsible for registering tuition academies and that a province-wide survey of such centres is currently underway.
The minister’s public relations officer also rejected the viral claim, while no official notification or government statement has been issued ordering a blanket ban on tuition centres across Punjab.
