KARACHI: The government of Russia is ready to extend support to Pakistan in the revival of the ailing Steel Mill in Karachi, said Russian consul general here on Saturday.
Andrey Viktorovich Fedorov was speaking at a function on Pakistan-Russia relations at the Council of International Relations.
He said that his country had always worked for promotion of peace and development in South Asia. The steel mill in Karachi was established during the tenure of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in the 197s through financial assistance of then USSR. The consul general said that the establishment of the steel mill was an example of the cooperation of the two countries.
It may be noted that recently the Senate standing committee on industries and production was told that that the federal cabinet had approved the scrapping of the steel mills and use its land for any other purpose as there was no buyer of it.
He also said that Pakistan was the first country with whom Russia cooperated on diplomatic visa, adding that relations between the two countries remained unaffected despite many changes in the government in the recent past.
He also said that the leaders of both Russia and Pakistan had held talks on cooperation in difficult sectors and Russia was extending help to ensure food security in Pakistan. Moreover, work had recently been started on projects launched by the two countries.
