Islamabad: The search for missing individuals in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) continues as rescue teams work tirelessly to locate those swept away by the recent flash floods.

Over the past week, floodwaters wreaked havoc in the region, damaging infrastructure and causing landslides that left roads impassable.

As of now, 10 bodies, mostly of tourists, have been found, but around 10 to 15 more remain unaccounted for.

Flash floods hit Gilgit-Baltistan unexpectedly, bringing severe destruction to the area.

The floods, accompanied by landslides, cut off vital access routes and caused massive damage to infrastructure.

Over 500 houses were destroyed, along with key roads and bridges that form the region’s transportation network. The floodwaters also wiped out several vehicles, making rescue and recovery efforts all the more difficult.

Local authorities have been working hard to restore normalcy in the region, with rehabilitation efforts accelerating in the affected areas.

Despite these efforts, the search for the missing individuals remains a top priority.

The region, which is a popular destination for tourists, has seen widespread distress as many of the missing people were tourists who were caught in the disaster while traveling.

According to Faizullah Faraq, the spokesperson for the GB government, search operations are focused around the Babusar Highway, a key route heavily affected by the floods.

The highway, which links several major areas in Gilgit-Baltistan, is critical for both transportation and communication.

Though several vehicles have been retrieved from the debris, the fate of those missing remains uncertain.

“The cars have been found, but there is still no trace of the missing individuals,” Faraq confirmed, noting that rescue teams are continuing to search the flood-stricken areas.

The recovery of the vehicles has provided some leads, but it has not yet led to the discovery of those who were inside at the time of the flood.

To further support the affected population, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to visit Gilgit-Baltistan in the coming days.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will meet with victims, assess the ongoing relief efforts, and evaluate the damage caused by the flash floods.

On Friday, he reiterated his commitment to providing full federal support for rehabilitation and reconstruction in the region.

“Relief efforts are ongoing, and we are determined to help rebuild the area as quickly as possible,” Sharif said in his statement.

While the search for the missing continues, significant progress has been made in restoring essential services.

Water and power supplies have been reconnected in many parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, and communication lines along the Babusar Highway, as well as other key areas, have been restored.

These efforts are providing relief to residents and ensuring that communication with the outside world is possible, especially during ongoing search and rescue operations.
